Famous for chocolate, waffles, fries and beer Belgium is home to some eye-catching medieval towns, sporting picturesque belfries and enticing market squares. The country itself is reasonably small, covering 30, 689 square kilometers (11, 849 sq. miles) but its population of almost 12million people makes it one of the most densely populated countries in Europe and the 22nd most densely populated countries in the world. Its capital Brussels is home to the headquarters of the Benelux Economic Union, the European Union and NATO, and, unsurprisingly perhaps, is the richest region in an already wealthy country. Belgium consistently ranks as one of the safest and most peaceful countries in the world.
