Is online gambling legal in China?
No, not in mainland China. The Criminal Law bans running gambling operations, and the state welfare and sports lotteries are the only legal betting (Criminal Law, Article 303). Macau and Hong Kong have separate laws.
What are the penalties for online gambling in China?
Organisers of gambling can face prison under Article 303 of the Criminal Law, and since 1 March 2021 that includes organising citizens to gamble abroad. Players can face detention and fines under the Public Security Administration Punishments Law.
Why do offshore casinos accept players from China?
They hold licences from other jurisdictions and choose their own accepted countries. Their licence does not make playing legal in China, and no Chinese body can help with a dispute.
What should I check before joining a new casino that accepts players from China?
Read the casino's terms on China first, because a casino can change the countries it accepts. Then check the licence it names, its withdrawal limits and the wagering on the welcome offer.
