Qatar is a sovereign and independent state in the Middle East occupying the Peninsula in the Arabian Gulf. Since it gained independence, Qatar has emerged as one of the largest oil and gas producers in the world. Being an Islamic state, the state laws and customs are greatly influenced by Islamic tradition.
Doha is the country's capital city and homes the largest number of the country's population. The city blends a number of pre-modern architecture with new shopping malls, office buildings and apartment complexes. While some parts of the country are influenced by its traditions the largest population is thoroughly modern and the government seeks to encourage civil liberties.
