Sri Lanka is a country in the Indian Ocean and considered part of South Asia. Separating it from the Indian subcontinent are the Palk Strait and the Gulf of Mannar. Because of its shape and location, the country is sometimes called The Pearl of the Indian Ocean.
According to its current constitution, it functions as a republic and a unitary state with a dual executive system in charge of its governance. It's one of the founding members of the SAARC (South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation).
The country is home to various cultures and ethnicities. Its center of commerce is Colombo, and its legislative capital is Sri Jayawardenepura Kotte.
