Thailand Sets Up 60-Member Committee to Study Gambling Complexities

The House of Representatives in Bangkok, Thailand, has established a committee with 60 members to investigate the possible opening of entertainment venues, including casinos. Much of this has emerged as a result of Thailand's struggles with illicit gambling and casinos, as well as efforts to strengthen the national economy.

Somsak Thepsuthin, Thailand's Deputy Prime Minister, discussed legalizing more gaming venues last month to raise tax revenue and assist those in need. 

Last month, social media users shared photos of the country's new PM, Srettha Thavisin, claiming he plans to legalize casinos and gambling. However, the government's spokesperson dismissed these reports as "fake news," claiming the misleading post uses a photo taken from another event.

Move Forward Party list MP Rangsiman Rome expressed support for the committee but also mentioned that steps should be taken to address any detrimental influence. The previous House of Representatives established A similar body to investigate this issue.

On the other hand, the United Thai Nation Party list MP Chatchawal Kong-udom emphasized the loss of income from casino games and sports betting while supporting the committee. The legislator said many gamblers go to neighboring countries to gamble in casinos, resulting in a loss of income.

Additionally, he clarified that establishing five casinos around the nation would contribute to creating jobs in Thailand.

House Speaker Wan Muhamad Noor Matha approved the appointment of the 60-member committee to investigate the venue for opening the casinos. This was after hearing no objections to the ideas presented during the debate. The committee has 90 days to submit a report.
