The Republic of Maldives is a country consisting of roughly 1,200 sandbanks and coral islands in the Indian Ocean in South Asia. The islands are grouped into atolls, the central being where the capital island of Male is located. Maldives is about 645 km from Sri Lanka and 600 km from India.
The local population numbers 557,400 as of 2020, with a population density of 1,377 persons per square km. Maldivian or Dhivehi is the official language while the official religion is Islam. Maldives uses the rufiyaa as its currency and tourism is its fastest-growing economic sector as well as the primary source of gross domestic product (GDP).
