Malawi, formerly known as Nyasaland, is a country located in southeastern Africa. It borders Zambia, Mozambique, and Tanzania. Its capital and largest city is Lilongwe. English and Chewa are the official languages.
The country covers an area of 118,484 km² (45,747 sq mi) and had a population of around 19,431,566 as of January 2021. Lake Malawi, otherwise known as Lake Nyasa, covers almost one-third of Malawi's area. Malawi is a least developed country. Its major economic activity is agriculture. About 80% of Malawi's population lives in rural areas.
Malawi is known for its smiling and friendly people and its freshwater lake, Lake Malawi, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
